Monitoring sound frequency in the modern digital era

The frequency of sound is the rate that a sound wave cycles from a positive to a negative and then back to a positive. The rate is usually measured in the number of cycles that take place every second. The measurement is referred to as hertz or simply Hz.
The human race can hear sound that range from the lowest level of 20 Hz to the highest level of 20,000 Hz. As with many features of our body and , higher levels of sound frequency tend to diminish with age. For example, it is not uncommon for a person in their 60s to have an upper level sound frequency limit of approximately 16000 Hz.

How to monitor sound frequency

Sound frequency is also related to wavelength, which is the distance required to complete a complete sound frequency cycle.
So how do you measure and monitor the rate of sound being produced?
One way to monitor sound frequency is by using a sound frequency meter. Also known as sound level meters and noise dosimeters, these user-friendly devices can measure the frequency range of sound as well as measuring overall sound pressure levels.
Some sound frequency meters offer a wider frequency range than others. For example, one instrument may offer a frequency monitoring range of between 31 to 160000 Hz, whilst another may provide a sound frequency range of 10 to 20000 Hz. Others are capable of monitoring broader ranges of sound frequency still, with high levels reaching as much as 102400 Hz.

Sound frequency meters can be invaluable to musicians. Acting as a professional tool they can scan frequency from a speaker in real time, or tune a guitar, piano or other musical instrument. They can even scan and monitor the frequency of a musician’s voice.
Such instruments are ideal in providing audio frequency diagnostics, providing a sound frequency range, current frequency and a frequency oscilloscope.

Sound frequency analysis software

Another method of sound frequency monitoring is to use sound frequency analysis software. There is a number of software programmes available designed to monitor the frequency of sound being produced by a particular source.

For example, the dScope Series III analogue and digital audio analysers are comprehensive and powerful ways to measure and analysis digital audio parameters, acoustic transducers and Windows sound devices.

Sound frequency analysis software can be downloaded onto devices such as smartphones and tablets in the form of apps. For example, the FFT Plot Real Time Sound Frequency Analyser can be downloaded onto IOS, Android and Windows Phone devices. This powerful audio analysis app provides real time sound frequency analysis. It is ideal for musicians, engineers, or anybody interested in the physics of sound and sound frequency. By providing an accurate reading of frequency in real time, these types of sound frequency analysis software are ideal for speaker or room tuning, enabling portable, precision audio measurement and visualisation.
In the modern digital era of advanced technology, the monitoring of sound frequency has never been so accurate and easy to obtain.
